DESCRIPTION

MAJOR POWER COMPONENTS OF THE
LOCOMOTIVE

1. TRANSFORMER

Type — FOAP, Form-A
Rating — 25 Cycles, 4969 KVA, 11000—1350 Volts,
Pyranol Filled, Forced Air Cooled

Function

Power from the 25 Cycle 11,000 Volt trolley wire is
transmitted by pantograph and cables to the
transformer primary. The secondary provides 1350 volts
for the synchronous motors and intermediate taps
provide power for the auxiliaries.

2. MOTOR GENERATOR SETS

Two sets are installed in each locomotive and each
is composed of a synchronous motor, and two traction
generators with exciters.

The rating and function of each unit comprising
these sets are as follows:

A. SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS (ASI-1, ASI-2)
Type — ASI, Form — HL
Rating — 4 pole, 3000 HP, 2490 KVA, 750 RPM,
1350 Volts, Single Phase, 25 Cycles, 1.0 P.F.

Function

To act as motors and drive the generators when
motoring or as generators which are driven by the
traction motors when regenerating.

B. TRACTION GENERATORS

Model No. 5GT574A1 (GIB, G2B), CCW Rotation
Model No. 5GT575A1 (G1A, G2A), CW Rotation
Rating — 12 pole, 1500 HP, 750 RPM, 700/450
Volts, 1500/2300 Amperes, Direct Current

Function

To supply power to traction motors when motoring,
or when regenerating, to receive power from
the traction motors and drive the synchronous
motor.

Model No. 5GTB574A1, CCW Rotation
Rating — 16 Pole, 80 KW, 750 RPM, 25 Volts, 3200
Amperes, Direct Current

Function

To excite the traction motor fields while
regenerating or control the motor field while motoring
with weak field in separate excitation.

D. MAIN EXCITERS (El, E2)

Model No. 5GTB575A1, CW Rotation
Rating — 6 Pole, 31.5 KW, 750 RPM, 45 Volts, 700
Amperes, Direct Current

traction generators, regenerative exciters and their
own fields.

3. TRACTION MOTORS (M1 thru M12)

Model No. 5GE746A2
Rating — 4 Pole, Commutating Pole, Series Wound, 420
HP, 1050 Amperes, 2300 CFM, Direct Current

Function

To act as motors supplying traction when motoring,
or as generators when regenerating.

4. COMPRESSORS (Cl, C2)

Model No. 7CPA39A1
Motor Rating — 6 Pole, 38 HP, 1170 RPM, 150 Volts,
240 Amperes, Forced Ventilation, Single Phase, 25
Cycles
Compressor Rating — 150 CFM Displacement, 135 PSI
Operating Pressure

Function

To provide air for air brakes and control.

5. MOTOR-ALTERNATOR SETS (MA1, MA2)

Model No. 5GDY28A1

One each of these forced ventilated sets are located
in each nose compartment. The rating and function
of each unit in each set is as follows:
